Worship

Worship is one of the most important issues in the Christian life yet there are so many different ideas about worship. What should worship look like? At SVBC our worship is guided by the following principles.

Worship is Primarily for God. Style is not the primary issue in our worship. While we have a specific style of worship at SVBC, to make style (IE traditional, contemporary, blended) the guiding principle of worship makes it about us rather than about God. When God is the focus, worship becomes what we can give, not what we can get out of a Sunday service.

Worship is for Life. We encourage people to live lives of worship throughout the week. Sunday should be the climax of the time that we have spent with God during the previous week. It should be the overflow of our lives, offered to God as a gift.

Worship is Everything We Do. That means . . .

as we interact with others in the Family of God, we treat each other with love, respecting our differences in taste and preferences.
our music is balanced. We sing some of the great hymns of the past that express our faith in grand and often eloquent ways. We also sing some of the best contemporary songs that express our love for God with words that flow from our hearts – we enjoy the best of both traditional and contemporary music and worship together as one body!
the Bible is the focal point of our lives and our worship. In order to gain the maximum benefit from the Bible for our lives, we teach the Bible, always relating God’s Word to the issues we face in life.

Knowing God

All of us have one thing in common: we have just one life. Not two – just one. And what you do with your one life is critical. Eternity depends on it.

So people do all kinds of things hoping that in the end it will all work out for them. Some people:

go to church
get baptized
try to be a good person
give money to the church
attempt to live a good life
don’t swear/lie/cheat etc
even read their Bible and pray

All of these things are important but we all know people who do these, and many more good things, but they are still empty inside. The reason for their emptiness is because they are looking for satisfaction in all the wrong places.

Satisfaction in life begins with God. The Bible (God’s letter to us) says that there are four things that you have to do to have a relationship with God (be OK with God).

1. Recognize the Seriousness of Your Situation

Sin means that you cannot know God the way you should. It is what separates you from God – and we’ve all sinned. It also means that God cannot accept us, in fact, we will have to pay for our sin.

For all have sinned and come short of the glory (what God expects of us) of God. Romans 3:23

The wages of sin is death (the price we have to pay). Romans 6:23

2. Realize the Love that God has for You

God’s love means that the penalty for your sin was paid by Christ on the cross.

For God so loved the world (each of us) that He gave His only begotten Son. John 3:16

God showed His love for us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

3. Repent of Your Sin

Repentance means to agree with God that your sin is wrong and to turn away from (reject) it.

God commands all men everywhere to repent. Acts 17:30

4. Receive God’s Forgiveness

God is willing to forgive you – all you have to do is ask.

For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:1

What We Believe

We are an Evangelical church committed to the historic orthodox faith. Here are eight statements that explain what we believe.

We believe that the Bible is the verbally inspired, inerrant, and complete, revelation from God explaining how to be saved from sin and how to live in a way that pleases God.

We believe that God is the one eternal God existing in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We believe that Jesus came to this earth, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross as our substitute, rose from the dead and will someday return to take His followers to heaven.

We believe that Satan is real, the cause of sin, and the enemy of God and His people.

We believe that all people are created in the image of God, but that because of Adam’s sin we are all born with a sinful nature, are therefore alienated from God and unable to do anything to save ourselves.

We believe that salvation is provided by God through Jesus Christ and is received by faith.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is God and convicts people of their sin, of the need for righteousness, and of a future judgment should they reject Jesus Christ.

We believe that those who put their faith in Jesus Christ are saved and kept by the power of God eternally.
